Once there was no college for higher education at the village of Rakudia in the upazilla of Babugonj, Barisal district. Abul Kalam Degree College was established in 1970 on the Western bank of the Sugandha with the patronization of the former speaker Justice Abdul Jabbar Khan, with the help of the local people devoted to education and donors including Mr. Sultan Ahmed Mollah and above all with the all out efforts of the great founder Alhajj Md. Hasan Ali Sharif. The students of all walks of life including poor and middle class people have been reading in the college since its foundation. As there were no colleges in the upazillas of Gouranadi, Muladi, Mehendigonj and Uzirpur at that time, this institution played a vital role in spreading education. Since its inception, the college has been conducting teaching programs, as well as co-curriculum activities with name and fame. The results of the students of the college have always been satisfactory.
