Halima Khatun Girls High School was initially established in 1923 as girls’ junior Madrasha. Jaminder Late Ismail Khan Chowdhury, a person interested in education of Charamaddi under Bakergonj P.S. established a girls’ junior Madrasha in a well protected house of Peshkar bari Bagura Road for the development of female education of Barisal. The number of students of that Madrasha began to increase gradually. Later on the Madrasha was shifted to Chowdhury’s own residence due to social unavailable circumstances. In 1928 Mr.Chowdhury’s nearest relative (his wife’s brother) Sir K.G.M. Faruqi the then land and Revenue minister of India came to his house. Having seen the Madrasha running inside his house he called in the District Magistrate and Collector of Barisal and asked him to manage a separate place for the institution instantly. Having gone through papers 74 decimals of land was found as abandoned of Polytechnic college at present place. Obtaining that land through acquisition the institution was transferred immediately at its present place. Now the total land area of the institution is 1.49 acres. Later on Khan Bahadur Hashem Ali Khan, Nowabjada Syed Fazle Rabby Chowdhury,Advocate Aziz Uddin Ahmed, Dr.Azahar Uddin, Dr. Syed Iman Ali , Chowdhury Abdul Latif, Yasin Ali Sharif, Amir Ali Khan and founder’s son Khan Fazle Rob Chowdhury Alias Shahajahan Chowdhury came in contract with the founder Ismail Chowdhury as active organiser’s to establish Halima Khatun Girls’ High School. Ismail Khan Chowdhury died in 1954. After that his son Shahajahan Chowdhury took the handle of the institution. The then Deputy Commissioner Mr. D.K. Power helped him in all respects. The first Headmaster of Halima Khatun Girls’ High School was Mr. Motahar Hossain. Among the next Headmaster and Headmistress Mrs. Mohsena Chowdhury M.A.,B.T.(First class First),Mrs. Farida Harun M.A.,B.Ed., Mr.Abdul Hamid B.A.,B.T.,Mr.Syeem Arshad B.A.,B.Ed Mrs. Sufiara Begum M.A.,B.Ed were most famous and the present Headmaster is Mr.Md.Amjed Hossain Mollah M.A.,B.Ed.(1st Class). The name and fame of Halima Khatun Girls’ High School is country wide. In 1979 Anjuman Ara Begum and Arpana Rani Das occupied the 4th and the 5th place in the S.S.C. Examination of B.I.S.E., Jessore from this school. In 1981 Aysha Siddika Neela of this school stood first in the S.S.C. Examination of Jessore Education Board from Home Economics Group. In 1983 Sarah Aziz of this school stood first in the S.S.C. Examination from the same group. Beside these many students of this school got first division every year and they showed eminence in later life. The advanced role of this school in the field of socio-economy, sports and culture of local as well as national stage is known to all. Many a time the students of this school took part in debate competition, games and sports at national stage more than one time. Specially, in Barisal the participation of the students of Halima Khatun Girls’ High School in the entire national programme has earned enough praise and this is going on. Besides, this institution has been showing credit in essay competition, debate competition, publishing wall newspaper and other activities organized by many G.O. and N.G.O. forums of Barisal. At present the number of students of this school are about 1500.The number of teachers are 38. The school is situated at the centre of the Barisal City Corporation. It has an attractive charming environment. There are a big hall room and 27 class room in one three storied and four two storied buildings. The school is financially solvent. This institution maintains its daily account, uses note-sheet and performs all kinds of payment through cheque.
